Communal or not? Empty Communal or not?

Post by exMachina Tue Apr 16, 2013 3:12 pm

We all know that many bark scorpions can be kept communally. I am used to do that, of course. To be honest, I'm not worried about cannibalism. I always put new feeders whenever they are scarce.

I have a good friend that told me to separate communal scorpions before molting to adulthood, for these scorpions might not mate upon reaching adulthood. You know, there may be a possibility that they will not mate because they are used to each other as siblings and not mating partners. In my experience, this happened. My R. Junceus pair did not mate because they are together since 2i. They only sat together for the whole day.

Maybe house this individually before reaching 6i? Suggestions? Please help.

They're both at 7i. I don't know if this is only coincidental or it is natural to them to treat their fellow as siblings if housed communally?

Most likely due to other reasons then what you have suspected, as scorpions do mate with their siblings, regardless if they grew up together or only placed together to mate after they have attained sexual maturity in individual enclosures.

For scorpions housed communally, sometimes we're just not there at the "right time" to witness their mating.. and the spermatophore might be brushed away from the mating platform (e.g. bark/ slate) by the scorpion's movement within the enclosure or in some scenarios, eaten by the male scorpion to replenish "lost energy" during the mating..

Liocheles is right, it's just a matter if time Smile

Btw, are you able to take a pic if the pair beside a ruler or lighter? If you have the chance.

Do let us know if you have more queries.

Too bad. My elder cousin took care of it 8 months ago and until now, the female scorpion did not popped. I guess, I need to have more observation for my scorps. Smile

If it's within his means, he's welcome to join our forum and shares his setup and concerns.

Sometimes, pictures really bring out the minor details that we may have overlooked Smile
