Improvising a starter terrarium for Asian Forest <a href=Improvising a starter terrarium for Asian Forest Image_zps4e78086f" />Beginner, getting a 3i Asian Forest scorp tomorrow and I want to give it the best For its house. I've scanned through forums but figured alternatives might be an option.

This place is pretty temporary. I'm going to buy it a larger aquarium next month, most probably. But in the meantime I want to maximize the one I have. Any ways to improve this?

My friend's instructions would be:

1st layer would be sand
2nd layer would be water
3rd layer would be uneven sand, so water would flow and create a pond

Btw I'm using black sand. And if it helps, I'm from Philippines.

It's better to use a substrate similar to soil. Sand is not their natural substrate and isn't good for holding humidity or burrows. Also, give it like 4+ inches of substrate. You could also do something like this: http://www.allscorpionarchives.com/t131-how-to-emulate-a-natural-looking-tropical-forest-scorpion-habitat.

Thanks for the info? But will this do for the meantime? Like few days while I buy the stuff?

Hi siyllables,

If you do not have a choice now, a few days on moist black sand should not be a problem while you get the right substrate. (coco fibre/peat recommended).

Your best bet is to get the stuff you need as soon as you can. Then buy the scorpion. Cause its going to be stressed enough when your putting it in a new environment, just think it will try and get use to the soil you have in the pic, then your just going to change it in a couple days which is just going to be more stress on the scorp.

I did the same thing, i got the wrong substrate, and had to redo the whole tank again probably stressing the crap out of her.

Good luck.

use rock in the first layer, then use cocopeat/soil above it. dont use sand, cocopeat will hold humidity longer, soil is good cause its they natural habit, but soil will make your scorps look dirty.
u can make ur DIY cocopeat, just buy 5-10 coconut (depends on how deep ur subtrates and how big ur terrarium. 5-10 coconut can make 7-9 cm in 40x20x20 terrarium, extract the inner skin (which is thick and hairy), dry it (1-2 days) and cut it into small pieces.  bounce
