My Pandinus imperator Popped
I had 3 Pandinus imperator living communally in June of 2012. They were all purchased form a communal enclosure at a local pet/reptile store. A few months ago it became apparent that one of the females was gravid.
At that time I separated her into her own enclosure and started the waiting game for Emps (oct 10th 2012). They take a while. So the waiting game sucked and I played hungry hungry hippos. Earlier this weekend I noticed she was stilting and arching to get as much warmth as possible to her embryos. I took this picture of her half under a hide but posing awkwardly to ensure everyone inside her got nice and warm.
As I was getting to bed around 1 AM last night I noticed new behavior from her and thought to watch for a while. She would stilt in the warmth and use her telson to itch or rub at the sides of her tergate and carapace alternating between the left and right side. The tip of her stinger would actually hook under her legs at times. During that time I noticed distinctly that her back was more shinny in appearance. At 2 AM I was sure I noticed a small white forum under her body but I didn't want to do anything to disturb her so I went to bed. I happily awoke and crept into my scorpion lair to find this.
We are at 5 so far but she is still in that birthing posture so I will leave her be and check again in a few hours. As a note she ate her last cricket meal less then 8 hours before the birthing process started. But I have noticed she took almost an hour to complete the meal. She was similarly slow in eating at last weeks feeding as well. Going forward I will note if that is an indicator of emps getting close to birthing.
So to keep track although I don't know exactly when she became pregnant originally we can determine a minimum gestation period of at least 10 and 3/4 months

Thank you. The count grows. In this latest pic I see 9 and she is still in the cradle posture so I'll keep ya posted.

So my best guess at what I can see is now near 20. Also she was birthing for a minimum of 24 hours and maximum of 32. At some point in the night she finished up while I was sleeping.

It's true. I'm not sure how mom can even see where she's going with all those kids sitting on her eyes!

yeah I'm aware that it works that way buddy. I was more making the joke based on how large this brood is and how they cover every square inch of her from tip to tail.

I know that you know that I know... What is this a pink panther movie? I'll be sure to keep posting pics especially at molts and first feeds. The good stuff.
Those beady black eyes actually made a few girls who in the past said "ew scorpions... you're some kind of gross idiot" say "awwww they are cute"
edit.
I remain in the gross idiot category.

Re: My Pandinus imperator Popped
As I type this they are sitting in the same spot. No one has been eaten and mom moves around the tank to keep temp and humidity optimal as she sees fit. I would post a new picture but honestly I don't think it will look any different from the last one. Aw what the heck I'll take another one.

Counting these guys are hard but now I'm thinking I see 23 from this shot. It could be more... I'm not pulling them off one at a time to count.

I would have literally chew on them
I'm guessing it's 25-26. Great shot there.

They seem a bit darker, or is it the light?

Re: My Pandinus imperator Popped
It's been a few days and they are defiantly getting a bit more yellow as apposed to the brilliant white they started out like.
It's been 5 days since they arrived so they should be getting close to a molt. They aren't as quick to grow as a desert species but I'm guessing they will dismount moms back in a 7 to 14 day window. Please correct me if I'm wrong here anyone.

Re: My Pandinus imperator Popped
I've never bred Emps, but based on my experience with large Heterometruses, I would guess not before day 14.
I may be wrong though, so do report back when it happens

Re: My Pandinus imperator Popped
You guys had a good estimation.
Right from birth, usually It takes about 9-11 days +/- to achieve 2.instar.
They would take another 4-7 days +/- for their exo-skeleton to harden up before they will dismount from mom's back.

Thanks for the detailed info bud.

Re: My Pandinus imperator Popped
So let this first pic be a "how not to" example. When taking macro pictures be careful that your specimen doesn't photo bomb your picture. Here is a close up picture of my Female Pandinus Imperator's anus.
Moving on... Here are the little guys a full 7 days from birth. As we can see they are turning a slightly yellow color compared to how they looked a week ago.
